Olive the Bird Killer

June 8, 2011

About a month ago Olive, our cat, drug a dead bird into the house through her cat door.  After chasing her around and eventually under the bed, I got the bird away form her and gave it a proper burial…in the garbage.  I had assumed that she found the bird dead in the yard because she isn’t much of a hunter.  Well, I guess I was wrong , because this afternoon Gillian, Elena and I where hanging out in the living room and we heard this strange squeaking sound as Olive proudly marched into the room with a live, full size, bird in her mouth.  Of course the bird got loose and started fluttering around the house with Olive in pursuit, jumping, pawing, and biting at the poor bird. I tried to direct the bird outside but failed because I was in tears with laughter.  Olive finally manager to knock the bird down onto her cat perch and it stopped moving. I wrapped it up in a towel and took it outside to through it into the field next to our house.  As I unwrapped it, the bird woke up and flew away.  Though based on the amount of feathers and “bird bits” in our living room and kitchen I don’t think it is long for this world.  Oh and the bird emptied it’s bowels on our coffee table, but I still find this all hilarious!

UPDATE: Olive caught another bird and brought it into the house yesterday over lunch and again this evening while we were having dinner!  That is three birds in three days, these must be the stupidest birds in the world!  We also really need to start shutting the garage door.

Nebraska State Fair

September 19, 2010
This year was the first year for the Nebraska State Fair to be held in Grand Island Nebraska. The State Fair had previously been held in Lincoln since 1901 and the move to Grand Island was quite the controversy here in the midwest.  It was officially announced  a little over a year ago that the fair was coming and ever since these huge red buildings (see above) have been popping up like weeds.
The six buildings in total, were built just west of Fonner Park and the Heartland Event Center and we just happen to live two block from Fonner Park so we are literally within walking distance of the fair. We spent two separate afternoons at the fair and I must say everything was done quite well, especially considering they pulled all the construction equipment out the night before the start.
The last weekend of the fair, Gillian’s brother, Colin, his wife, Katie, and kids, Colleen and PJ came to visit from New York.  The kids loved the fair, with combine rides, pedal tractors, and copious farm animals.  It was great to see everyone and get a glimpse at what is in Gillian’s and I’s future.

Interesting Couple of Weeks

September 28, 2009

It has been an interesting couple of weeks.  There was the SL 500 parked at Wal-Mart, which just seems wrong to me.  I keep scaring myself with my own hat and jacket at work.  Then we got this crazy postcard in the mall.  I mean really, mountains in Nebraska? I guess the dragon and the goat with seven laser eyes is also kind of odd.  The good part is the “Pastor” put his picture on the back so I know if I see him, that he is crazy and I should be leaving.

We also had Olive knock the dog treats off the counter into her water bowl, destroying the bowl.  Of course all she wants is her damn dinner!  Then there is Gordie, who is so fixated on the ball he doesn’t realize he has a leaf stuck to his nose

There is a bit of news too.  Gillian has decided she wants to learn to play hockey…so I went on a shopping spree.  I bought all her equipment without her actually being there, so I think I did a pretty damn good job, the breezers might be a little small but they will work.  Gillian’s first game/practice is tonight!  I think I am more excited then she is.

I haven’t heard anything about the eBay Motors Master Contest yet.  I don’t think I won, the winner was supposed to be notified on Sept. 23 and it will be announced Oct. 1st.

Oh and one more thing, I just realized I have been doing this blog thing for over a year.

Rawhide Bone…A Love Story

December 27, 2008

Anyone who knows our dog, Gordie, knows he likes to chew on things and Santi and Sarah probably know him the best. They bought Gordie a three foot long, rawhide bone, he loved it. He got it on Saturday afternoon and he loved it so much that it was gone Wednesday night. I took pictures of his progress; Day one, Day two, Day three, Day four.

First Husker Game of the Year

September 3, 2008
It is officially the start of the football season! In honor of the Huskers first game we put a red hoodie on Gordie…I guess.  He was not a fan!  Oh, Huskers 47  Western Michigan 24

Dog Poop + Car = Late For Work

September 2, 2008

I left the garage door open one night(I do this a lot) and a stray dog wondered in. When Gillian was getting in her car she noticed the dog and came in to tell me… and left the car door open. This is where this dog thought the safest place in the garage was. When I tried to get the dog out it bit me and pooped…twice!! Long story short; Gillian drove my truck to work so she wouldn’t be late, I found the owner’s house and after three tries, woke him up to return the dog and was only 15 minutes late for my job.  Of course Gillian blames me for everything.
